Scheduling Maintenance for your Water Heater
One of the best things that you can do for your water heater is to schedule regular maintenance. Not only will you reap all of the benefits listed above, but you will have peace of mind that your water heater will continue to work for years to come.
While scheduling water heater maintenance at least once a year with a professional plumber is recommended, there are some things that you can do on your own to ensure proper function. The first, and most important, is just to take a look at the system itself. Check for any leaks, strange noises or foul odors.
The second thing that you can do is to perform a flush every few months. This is only applicable to water heaters with tanks. On the tank there should be a drain valve located near the bottom. Place a bucket underneath and turn the valve so that water is released. The water will be hot so be careful not to burn yourself. Once a few gallons have been released, close the valve up nice and tight.
